Churn argues that many of our deepest social divisions are fueled by stereotypes and identity dynamics that operate beneath our awareness. Claude Steele draws on decades of research to help us understand why these tensions persist—and how we can respond in ways that reduce polarization rather than deepen it.
(Claude M. Steele is an American social psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, where he previously served as Dean of the Graduate School of Education.)
