Interviewing Advice from the New Work Rules

The authors in the book I presented this month at the First Friday Book Synopsis, had some interesting advice for people who go on job interviews.  I produced two of these for you below.

Cavoulacos, Alexandra, & Minshew, Kathryn (2017).  The new rules of work: NewRulesofWorkCover The modern playbook for navigating your career.  New York:  Crown Books.

Connecting with the interviewer (pp. 171-172)

  • Don’t skip the small talk
  • Be yourself – the professional, charming, gracious version
  • Mirror the interviewer
  • Focus on the conversation, not a rapid-fire Q&A
  • Make sure you’d pass the “airport test”

Interview mistakes to avoid (pp. 180-181)

  • Appearing desperate
  • Being too aggressive
  • Using industry jargon and acronyms
  • Showing up too early or too late
  • Having a terrible handshake
  • Talking too much
  • Getting too comfortable
  • Asking what’s in it for me?
  • Bringing up salary
  • Lying
